Deepa, the elder sister of the law student who was brutally sodomised and murdered in Kerala’s Perumbavoor, spoke out against the media earlier today, complaining of harassment and misreporting of facts.
Deepa, who has been staying at a hospital along with her mother who was admitted for shock, told reporters that she was cast as an accused in the murder case by local channels after she boarded a police van to go to her house.
“I have been staying at the hospital for a few days now. I had to go home to pick some clothes as well as my bank passbook in connection with a job. When ‘Sir’ (a police officer) said he was going that way, I decided to go in the their van as it would be safe. I came back in the same van to learn that news channels were reporting that I have been arrested as an accused in the case. Who gave you that information to publish?’ Deepa asked reporters in a fit of rage.

“I have lost my sister. You must understand that. You are actually torturing us. What are you gaining from it? Don’t you have sisters at your homes? If you lose a loved one and if people like me come to your house and start behaving like this, how would you feel? You would drive them away. But we are from a poor family, which is why you are behaving this way,” Deepa lashed out.
More than a week has passed since the brutal murder of the 30-year old law student belonging to a Dalit family. even though a number of persons have been questioned and detained, the state police has been unsuccessful in zeroing in on the real culprits. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation in the state with many, including the media, questioning the lackadaisical attitude of the police in solving the case.
