With the AIADMK stalling Parliament over reports of Congress leader P Chidambaram’s son Karti’s alleged investments, the Congress Tuesday trained its guns at the BJP government, accusing it of using “news plants” to divert attention from the JNU row and Rohith Vemula issue.
“A jittery Modi government is using the modus operandi of news plants to divert Parliament’s attention from anti-Dalit/ anti-student policies. The attempt is to distract attention from Smriti Irani misleading Parliament and the disappointing Budget, which is inflationary and will break the back of the middle class/salaried class and only pays lip service to farmers,” said Congress communications head Randeep Surjewala.

“Karti Chidambaram as also the company concerned has issued a statement. He is a private individual. Even in the past, when the ED and BJP government raided the offices of Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited and others, it was emphasised many times that Karti is neither a shareholder nor a director in the company. The company has repeatedly asserted that it is the Income Tax, Registrar of Companies and RBI compliant,” he said.

“If it is a political battle against P Chidambaram on account of vendetta, it should be fought in the arena of politics instead of hiding behind insinuations,” he said.
While the Congress came out in support of Chidambaram, party MP V Hanumantha Rao alleged that the Congress was in dire straits in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana because of Karti.
“His son’s influence was so much that he made a person, who had never been a minister before, CM of Andhra Pradesh. And after becoming CM (Kiran Kumar Reddy) repeatedly gave statements that he would not allow division of the state despite the Congress Working Committee and Sonia Gandhi deciding to bifurcate it. His statements damaged the Congress immensely, and the party is in dire straits in both states now,” Rao, a Rajya Sabha MP, said.
