Mahatma Gandhi has been replaced by Arvind Kejriwal, Kapil Mishra is the ‘RBI governor’ and Rs 1,000 has become Rs 400 crore. To spread its message about the AAP government’s alleged involvement in the Rs 400 crore DJB water tanker scam, the BJP has printed 36,000 handbills resembling a Rs 1,000 note to hand out to people.
BJP national secretary R P Singh said, “When people are given pamphlets, they might throw them away without looking at them. This defeats the whole exercise of reaching out to people. However, we feel people will not throw away the handbill. They might keep it as a souvenir.”
Though the handbills look exactly like a Rs 1,000 note, a closer look shows the changes made by the party.
Instead of Mahatma Gandhi, the bills have a picture of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The words on his trademark white cap, Swaraj Chahiye, have been changed to Ghotala Party. The small image of a lion on the right-hand corner has been replaced with that of a fox.
Instead of the national emblem on the left-hand corner, the handbills sport the party’s symbol — the broom.
In bold print in the centre, ‘1000’ has been replaced by 400 crore. Below the figure is a line which says, “Delhi Jal Board ke ghotale dwara arjit (earned through the DJB scam)”.
The serial numbers that can be used to track the currency on top and bottom of the original note have been replaced by ‘AK 420 420’ in the handbill. Similarly, ‘Reserve Bank of India’ has become ‘Aam Aadmi Bank of Corruption’. The promise by the RBI governor “to pay the bearer the sum of one thousand rupees” has been changed to a promise “not to pay the bearer the sum of four hundred crore rupees”. The BJP has also replaced the RBI governor’s signature with that of Water Minister Kapil Mishra.

Party sources said the new handbills have some additional changes. While Kejriwal’s collar sports the word ‘Farziwal’, the image on the reverse of the handbill is that of a tanker.
Accompanying the handbills is a signature campaign, requesting people to call for a fair investigation into the alleged scam, and Kejriwal’s resignation.
Responding to the move, AAP spokesperson Deepak Bajpai said the BJP was asked to desist from disregarding national figures and symbols. “The party has no regard for Mahatma Gandhi. We advised them not to play with national symbols and find other ways to attack us. We are hurt because Gandhi has been targeted. We would like to advise them to stop insulting Gandhi for ulterior political motives,” said Bajpai.
