A month after they “feared academic harassment” from the resident faculty and set external evaluation as a demand for returning to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar, none of the outstation students has opted for external evaluation of their examination papers.
As the deadline to opt for external evaluation ended on Wednesday, not a single student – out station or local – has requested for external evaluation. After the agitation by outstation students and demand for external evaluation in a meeting with HRD Minister Smriti Irani, it was accepted on “written request and irrevocable basis”.
“We had notified and yesterday was the last date,” Director, NIT Srinagar, Rajat Gupta told The Indian Express. “We did not receive any written request from the students.”

A delegation of the non-local students, who met union HRD minister Smriti Irani last month, had asked for external evaluation of their answer scripts accusing the resident faculty of NIT Srinagar of academic harassment. The students reiterated the demand in a meeting with the Director of the institute on April 19 at New Delhi.
Following the demand, the “optional” external evaluation was approved on a “written request and irrevocable basis”. On April 26, the Controller of Examination at NIT Srinagar issued a notification asking students, who want external evaluation, to submit a written request by May 4. But none of the students has come forward with the written request.
A brawl between local and non-local students at NIT Srinagar over the World T20 semi-final between India and West Indies had led to clashes in the campus. Non-local students boycotted the classes and pressed for many demands, including shifting of the institute outside Kashmir and hoisting of Tri-colour inside the campus after police allegedly used excessive force against the students for trying to leave the campus holding placards and banners on April 5.
Over 1200 students had left for their homes last month after the unrest at campus. Though the local students normally attended the classes and appeared for the exams after the group clash over India’s loss to West Indies, the non-locals were given the option of appearing for the exams after their return.
The college administration had accepted a slew of demands from the agitating students including the relaxation in hostel timing for girl students, external evaluation and improvement in medical and hostel facilities.
