Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday attacked those questioning the performance of his government at a rally in Karnataka’s Davangere district and credited the NDA for dismantling the hold of middlemen in government functioning.
“We have taken up the task of removing middlemen. We do not need middlemen anymore. The government is strengthening systems and eliminating the role of middlemen. The games played by middlemen have resulted in the loot of this country… Middlemen have been stopped from thriving. This is the change we have brought in. We have introduced 700 schemes in the past two years,” said Modi at a rally here as part of ‘Vikas Parv’ (festival of development) to celebrate the completion of his government’s two years in office.
Modi said that he was committed to pursue the path of development without treading the “path of sin”.
“I may be asked why Modi doesn’t do big things? Earlier governments have done big things, they did it for big people, they reaped big benefits out of it… Should I commit the same sin? Should I go on the wrong path? When you have blessed me, there is no need for me to go on that path of sin. Even if one or two things remain undone, I will not let the nation go on the wrong path,” he said.
Accusing previous governments of having “yielded to the pressure from various lobbies”, Modi said his government’s programmes were mostly for the benefit of the poor and the farmers.
“I have done a lot for the welfare of farmers. I have given importance to production of ethanol which makes India less dependent on foreign nations for fuel… I have not bowed to the petrol and diesel lobbies,” said Modi, adding that his government planned to raise the limit of ethanol mix in petrol and diesel from five per cent as some foreign countries permitted a mix of up to 30 per cent. He reiterated his dream to double the income of farmers in the country by 2022.
