On the occasion of Mother’s Day, JNU students’ union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar wrote an open letter to Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani, asking how a “mother” could punish her “children” based on “doctored videos”.
Kumar was referring to the punishment meted out to JNU students by the university in connection with the February 9 event on campus, where anti-India slogans were allegedly raised.
“Somebody asked me how Rohith (Vemula) lost his life despite there being so many mothers in our country — gau mata, bharat mata and ganga mata. I had no answer, so I’m asking you for one. He also told me that your ministry sent not one but several letters to ensure Rohith and his friends were punished. It was because of your ministry that Rohith did not receive his fellowship for seven months…,” he wrote.

Talking about a protest in JNU Sunday night, where mothers of students joined in solidarity with those on hunger strike, Kumar wrote, “A mother’s duty is to teach her children what is right and wrong and to raise their voice against injustice. This is why many mothers
joined the students sitting on strike, to boost their spirit… Among them is an 80-year-old mother who is wheelchair-bound.”
