As the death toll in Sunday’s derailment of the Patna-bound Indore-Patna Express mounted to 146, family members and relatives, anxious to know the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones, made frantic inquiries and searched hospitals and mortuaries in and around Kanpur. In the confusion and grief, some managed to track down the children of their missing kin. Four-year-old Adarsh, who was admitted to the Pukhrayan Community Health Centre, was handed over to his uncle, Manoj Pandey, who had come across the bodies of the child’s brother Rishabh (8) and father Ravindra. “Adarsh’s mother is still missing. We have searched everywhere,” Pandey said as he waited outside the mortuary in Akbarpur to lodge a ‘missing person’ report.

Ten-year-old Abhay, who suffered a head injury, has been unconscious at the Hallet Hospital — the only survivor from a family of five. His parents, Sanjay Srivastava and Pratima, sisters Suhani (16) and Surbhi (13) are dead. Srivastava, who worked at a textile mill in Indore, was going to Varanasi to attend a wedding.

“We have brought four bodies to our village for cremation. Tomorrow, I will go to Kanpur to shift Abhay to another hospital,” his uncle Harsh said. At the accident site, revenue official Prakash Singh made entries for articles found in Pratima’s purse — Rs 7,200 cash, a gold ring, her and her husband’s Aadhaar cards and a Micromax mobile phone with a shattered screen.

Officials shifted all 80 unclaimed bags and suitcases to the Reserve Police Line of Kanpur Dehat as the rescue operation at the site neared completion.
