The probe into the gruesome murder of an elderly woman and a 10-year-old boy in their sleep has thrown up a bizarre motive behind the late night crime. Hyderabad Police have arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly bludgeoning the victims to death as they apparently resembled the accused’s relatives with whom he was having a family dispute. “It was his way of taking revenge; killing two innocent persons who for him resembled his sister-in-law and nephew,’’ an official said.
According to police, the accused, identified as Jitender Singh from Mangalghat, was unmarried and lived in the family house along with his two elder brothers and their families in Mangalghat’s Sitarambagh. His older sister-in-law, Suchitra, allegedly wanted him to leave the house. She and her son, Durgesh, allegedly abused and insulted him whenever he was at home, officials said.
On April 29, Jitender reportedly had a fight with Suchitra and Durgesh, and was also roughed up by the duo. Later, he locked himself up in his room for two days and finally left home on his bicycle on the night of May 1. Police sources said that after covering nearly 12 km, he came across a boy sleeping on the footpath near the BJP office at Kattelamandi in Abids.[related-post]
“He says that the boy reminded him of his brother’s son, Durgesh, although they both were of different ages. He stopped and made sure nobody was around, picked up a heavy stone and smashed it on the boy’s head causing his instantaneous death. It was about 3 am at that time. Then he simply cycled away from there. He reached the Red Hills bylane in Nampally about 30 minutes later and saw an aged woman sleeping on the ramp of Javeed Mansion, who reminded him of his sister-in-law. He searched for a big stone and bludgeoned her.
Then he cycled back to his house taking long detours and went to sleep in his room,’’ an official said.
While the two incidents happened in two different areas and appeared to be unrelated initially, the method used in the murders raised a red flag and the case was then given to the Task Force.
“We scrutinised hours of footage from 25 CCTV cameras at road junctions in the areas. At Mangalghat junction, we got a grainy image of a man on a bicycle wearing a cap riding in the early hours of May 2. We assumed he lived in that area, and with the help of human intelligence we identified and arrested him,’’ Task Force DCP B Limba Reddy said. The victims, meanwhile, remain unidentified.
