Goa: French national smothers her 7-year-old daughter to death, commits suicide

The police said that they broke open the door after the staff of boarding lodge, Grande Peddem, found foul smell emanating from the room which Sevirina had rented.

A 44-year-old French national allegedly committed suicide after smothering her 7-year-old adopted daughter to death at a rented accommodation in Anjuna on Friday.

The deceased identified as Sevirina Figueiredo hailed from France. She frequently visited Goa every year for vacation, the police said relying on her Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) record.

According to the authorities, two months ago her husband, Richard Figeredo, left from Goa to France. “As per the record she was married, but we cannot confirm what transpired between the couple in recent months,” Anjuna station Police Inspector, Paresh Naik said.

The police said that they broke open the door after the staff of boarding lodge, Grande Peddem, found foul smell emanating from the room which Sevirina had rented.

The authorities discovered the body of Sevirina in a pool of blood with her throat slit; alongside, they also found the body of her adopted daughter whom the officials believe was smothered by her mother before killing herself.

“The deceased had written a single-page suicide note tendering apology to her parents for her actions and mentioning that she was no longer interested to live,” the officials said. According to the police, the minor girl hailed from Karnataka whom Sevrina had adopted.

Officials said that the preliminary findings indicated murder and suicide incident as among other things – the door of the room was latched from inside, forensic examination did not detect any trace of third person’s presence, the police said. “We have booked a case under 174 CrPC (inquire and report suicide). Through FRRO, we have also contacted the French embassy and the victims family,” the official added.
