THE Congress is organising a “Chai ki Charcha” at Dabhadi village in Arni tehsil of Yavatmal district on Thursday to highlight the growing farming distress. It was at Dabhadi that then BJP prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi had held a “Chai pe Charcha” in 2014 to highlight farmer’s issues prior to the general elections.
Addressing a press conference, former social justice minister Shivajirao Moghe said MPCC chief Ashok Chavan, general secretary Digvijay Singh, Raj Babbar and a few other leaders will attend the programme. “Modi had promised Achhe Din but failed to deliver and that’s why this programme has been organised,” Moghe said. “Dabhadi has seen three suicides in the last two years. Not only did Modi fail to fulfil the promises made at Dabhadi but also didn’t visit the drought-affected state even once,” he added.

Claiming that the farmers’ plight has only deteriorated in the BJP rule, Moghe said, “Banks are not ready to increase loan amounts to farmers. The promise of giving 50 per cent in addition to minimum support price has also remained unfulfilled. The BJP governments at Centre and state are both anti-farmer and anti-rural.”
The state government has tried to blunt criticism by doling out Rs 1 crore to Dabhadi village. The money is planned to be spent on irrigation, deepening of nullahs, roads, various developmental works and provision of funds to the women’s self-help groups. Dabhadi sarpach Santosh Take has expressed the hope that the village will undergo transformation with judicious use of the money.
