A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable allegedly shot himself in a restroom at the Chennai international airport on Thursday afternoon. Official sources said the 27-year-old constable, Pulak Rajbongshi from Assam, was deployed at the airport and he used his own service rifle to kill himself.
“We have ordered a probe. Preliminary inquiry confirms it was a suicide,” said a senior CISF official.
In May, two CISF personnel had killed themselves — one at NHRC headquarters in New Delhi and another in Raghunathpur Thermal Power Plant in West Bengal — with their service weapons.
A senior official said suicides in the short-staffed security force, where stress levels are high, are on the rise, but nothing has been done to tackle the issue.
In September 2014, a CISF head constable guarding the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial in Sriperumpudur had shot himself with his service rifle, allegedly because he was denied leave to visit his family in Uttar Pradesh.
Although there was a huge uproar after the incident and there were recommendations to look into the issue, the official said the authorities concerned are yet to ake any steps.
