The Kerala High Court on Monday rejected a state government petition seeking a stay on the Vigilance court order which asked the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau to register a case against the state Excise Minister K Babu, who allegedly pocketed bribe from bar owners. On last Friday, Babu was forced to quit in the wake of the high court order. Hence, the government, already impaired by corruption charges, made a last-minute attempt to salvage its face. The government moved the petition on the ground that the high court is considering a plea seeking CBI probe into the scam. However, the Vigilance court in Thrissur, which had ordered probe against Babu, had already stated that the Vigilance court order would eclipse the high court order on the issue.
