Banihal: Nine GREF workers killed, several injured as tipper falls into stream

Nine people working as labourers with GREF were killed and several others seriously injured when a tipper carrying them fell into Bisleri stream flowing nearly 350 ft below the national highway at Shalgadi in Banihal on Saturday evening.

All the victims, sources said, were engaged by 52 Road Construction Company of GREF. They were returning home from Maggerkote near Ramsu where they had been deployed for maintenance of the National highway.

The Rashtriya Rifles personnel along with local police, Indian Red Cross volunteers and local people launched rescue operations bringing dead bodies and the injured on the road. Five people had died on the spot, while ten others were rushed to the hospital.
