The ruling Congress party in Assam on Friday renewed its demand for removal of state governor PB Acharya, with the APCC saying that the governor has already lost the confidence and goodwill in the eyes of the people because of his “irresponsible” statements.

In Guwahati on the other hand the APCC took out a march through the city, with its president Anjan Dutta submitting a similar memorandum to the Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner for onward dispatch to the President.

The memorandum referred to a recent remark by the governor in which he allegedly said that Hindustan was for Hindus, and that Muslims were free to go to Pakistan or Bangladesh, described those as irresponsible statements that could create hatred among Hindus and Muslims and demanded immediate removal of Acharya from the post.

“We strongly believe that continuance of PB Acharya as governor of Assam with such ulterior motive will shatter the social fabric of our country. We also believe that the governor had already lost the confidence and goodwill of the people of Assam irrespective of caste, creed, religion and political affiliation,” the memorandum signed by the APCC president said.
