Agra: 13 die after consuming spurious liquor

CM Akhilesh Yadav has suspended five government employees, including three from the excise department and two police officers, for dereliction of duty.

AT LEAST 13 people died and three lost eyesight after consuming spurious liquor in Aliganj area of UP’s Etah district, police said Saturday. Four others are in a critical state, they said. All the victims are daily wage labourers.

CM Akhilesh Yadav has suspended five government employees, including three from the excise department and two police officers, for dereliction of duty. DM Ajay Yadav has ordered a magisterial probe into the matter.

Police said the labourers had organised a get-together Friday night. They reportedly bought liquor from a vend owned by one Shri Pal. Hours after drinking, police said, they started vomiting and complained of nausea and blurred vision. They were rushed to district hospital where five were declared brought dead. Eight more died later in the day. An FIR has been lodged against Shri Pal. The state government has announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those undergoing treatment.
