A magisterial court Monday dismissed the bail plea of AAP MLA from Narela Sharad Chauhan, who was arrested in connection with a party worker’s alleged suicide. He has been sent to 14 days judicial custody in Tihar Jail.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Ashish Aggarwal rejected Chauhan’s bail plea on the grounds that investigation is at a nascent stage.

The court, however, dismissed further extension of police custody of Chauhan and co-accused Sonu, Mohan Lal Verma, Delhi Police ASI Mukhtiyar Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Amit Kumar and Rajni. “I have heard the arguments. Investigation is at a nascent stage… In light of the fact that investigation is only at the initial stage, I do not deem it fit to grant bail to the accused persons. The bail application is rejected,” said CMM Aggarwal.

He added, “The accused persons have admittedly been subjected to lengthy and repeated interrogation… Police custody is not expedient. Therefore,
the said application (extension of police custody) is rejected.”

During the proceedings, Delhi Police opposed Chauhan’s bail plea and said there was a possibility that the accused persons might influence and
threaten the witnesses. It also said more time is required to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Advocate Pradeep Rana, appearing for Chauhan, sought bail claiming that the MLA and others were falsely implicated in the case on account of
political rivalry. “At the most, it can be alleged that Chauhan neglected providing redressal to the deceased but that would not be tantamount to
abetment of suicide,” said Rana.
