972 get lucky in draw of lots for MHADA flats

Actors Chhaya Kadam, Tej Sapru, Hemangi Kavi, Suhas Paranjape among winners

One of the actors in the hit Marathi film Sairat, Chhaya Kadam, and a few other Marathi actors were among the 972 lucky winners in a draw of lots held Wednesday for a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) project.

“I could not sleep well in last few days thinking about what would happen on August 10. But I am so happy today that I am one of the lucky winners. To have my own house in Mumbai is one of my dreams. Now, it is fulfilled, and I’m eagerly waiting to shift into the new house,” Kadam told The Indian Express.

Kadam, who will now purchase a flat at Pratiksha Nagar in Sion, has played the role of Suman Akka in Sairat.

She also played the role of the mother of a lead actor in Fandry, another Marathi movie that focuses on a young boy’s infatuation amid caste-based discrimination.

“This is for the first time that I applied for a house under the MHADA lottery. Now, I will focus more on my work to get national recognition since I am tension-free about a house,” said Kadam, who currently lives with her father in Kalina, Santacruz (E).

Other actors who won the opportunity to buy MHADA flats include Bollywood actor Tej Sapru and Marathi actors Hemangi Kavi and Suhas Paranjape.

“Today, I have become a true Mumbaikar. My father, who was in police service, had dreamt of having a home in the city but it remained unfulfilled. I am very happy as I have got home in Goregaon today,” said Kishor Wagh, a constable posted at the Santacruz police station whose name was also there among the winners.

The draw started Wednesday morning with the scheme in Siddharth Nagar, Goregaon. Approximately, 1.36 lakh applications were received by the MHADA for the 972 affordable houses.

The cost ranged from Rs 8.17 lakh for a 261-square-foot one in Malvani to Rs 83.86 lakh for 1,291-square-foot flats at Shailendra Nagar in Dahisar. Other areas where houses were put on sale include Borivli, Kurla, Chembur and Mankhurd.

Ravindra Waikar, Minister of State for Housing, said if the winners had got houses in old buildings, these would be repaired by the MHADA.

“The government has taken a decision about this,” he said.
