IMA national vice president Dr Sunil Chugh warned of an agitation if Yeole’s appointment is not cancelled.
The Rajasthan chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written a letter to Rajasthan Governor and Chancellor Haribhau Bagde requesting him to cancel the appointment of a “non-doctor”, Dr Pramod Yeole, as the Vice Chancellor of Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS), Jaipur, stating that there is “deep resentment and dissatisfaction” over the appointment.
“On behalf of the entire medical community of Rajasthan, considering your sensitivity and administrative discretion, we are writing this letter to you. Recently, a non-physician doctor has been appointed to the post of Vice-Chancellor of Rajasthan Medical University, due to which there is deep resentment and dissatisfaction among the doctors of the state,” the IMA said in its letter to the Governor.
“The very purpose of establishing medical universities was to place medical education in the hands of experts who themselves are deeply involved in the medical field and possess higher medical qualifications like MBBS, MD, DM, or MCh,” it said.
“The appointment of a non-doctor to the highest academic post—Vice Chancellor—of Rajasthan Medical University is totally unfair and unjust to the qualified doctors of the state. This will not only affect the quality of medical education but also will adversely impact the careers of thousands of medical students, teachers and doctors in the state,” the IMA said.
The RUHS controls all the government medical colleges, about 30 of them as well as the nursing colleges in the state.
Requesting the Governor to cancel the appointment, the IMA said that, “The medical community considers this decision as a blow to the interests of the medical field and has expressed its strong disagreement with it. This decision also seems to question the competence of doctors in Rajasthan.”
The Raj Bhawan officials, meanwhile, said that Yeole was appointed “on the recommendation of the selection committee and in consultation with the state government.”
IMA national vice president Dr Sunil Chugh warned of an agitation if Yeole’s appointment is not cancelled.
Yeole, who holds a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, was in 2019 appointed as the V-C of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. In 2015, he was appointed as the Pro V-C of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. Yeole also served as Professor and Principal at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research at Wardha for 15 years before his 2015 appointment as the Pro V-C.
