All five cases have been reported within a week. The child, who was admitted to a private hospital on January 6 with symptoms including cold, cough, and difficulty breathing, has no history of foreign or other travel, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Earlier today, a 10-month-old child in Assam and a 3-year-old child in Puducherry were also diagnosed with human metapneumovirus (HMPV).
What has the Health Ministry said? All states have been advised to step up surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI) and Influenza Like Illness (ILI) to identify any surge in respiratory illnesses in the wake of the spread of the largely benign Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. The Indian Council of Medical Research has said that HMPV is “already in circulation” globally, including in India.

What is Human Metapneumovirus? Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), identified in 2001, spreads through direct contact or contaminated surfaces. It causes mild respiratory symptoms, similar to the flu, such as cough, fever, and blocked nose. The virus primarily affects young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Basic precautionary measures to combat HMPV include— wearing masks, avoiding close contact with people exhibiting flu-like symptoms and washing hands regularly.

Protecting yourself from HMPV: How to choose the right mask for maximum safety
The recent rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases has raised concerns about how to protect oneself from this respiratory infection. While the virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets, using a mask remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the risk of transmission.
However, not all masks offer the same level of protection, leading to questions about the efficacy of different types, such as cloth masks, surgical masks, and respirators like N95. Are cloth masks still a safe option, or should you switch to something more robust? Dr Ravi Shekhar Jha, director, Pulmonology at Fortis Hospital Faridabad, tells indianexpress.com, “Cloth masks, while convenient, offer limited protection against respiratory infections like HMPV. They can block larger respiratory droplets but are less effective at filtering out smaller particles that can carry viruses.”

HMPV Virus Cases Live Updates: Don’t panic, keep vigil
The Centre has done the right thing in asking state governments to step up surveillance for the HMPV virus. The pathogen is not new. It was first detected in the Netherlands more than 20 years ago and regularly surfaces during the winter months. In several developed countries, HMPV is the second-most frequently detected virus among infants.
In India, regular laboratory tests to detect this virus are not conducted. However, studies by the ICMR and other medical research agencies indicate that it is among the common flu pathogens. (Read More)
