Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan Thursday invited Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) executive president Hemant Soren to form the government in the state, a day after his predecessor Champai Soren stepped down as Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister, along with his Cabinet, will be taking oath today, party general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya has said.

Champai met the Governor on Wednesday to submit his resignation after the ruling coalition’s 45 MLAs elected Hemant as their leader. Hemant was released from jail after the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail on June 28, five months after he was arrested. The court had noted that there exist “reasons to believe that he was not guilty of the offence” of money laundering brought against him over a plot of land in Ranchi.

As The Indian Express reported earlier, Champai had been reluctant to let go of the CM’s post, saying that “it would not look good” as the elections in the state were just months away. He had also asserted that he, too, was a “mass leader”, and there might be attempts to destabilise Hemant’s government again as he was only out on bail.

Addressing a rally after he was released, Hemant on Sunday claimed that state elections would be “held earlier” and he was ready to face them at any time. “Due to the situation in the country today, the INDIA bloc has decided to launch a revolution. We have vowed to uproot these feudal people (BJP) from the state and the country,” he said.
