Sadiq Jamal encounter: On plea for probing Narendra Modi role,CBI says it is digging deeper

Sadiq was allegedly killed after being handed over to Gujarat Police by Maharashtra policemen.

The CBI Thursday told a special court here it was looking into the “relevant points” made in a petition that accused CM Narendra Modi and former home minister Amit Shah of involvement in the Sadiq Jamal encounter.

CBI’s submission came on a plea filed by Sadiq’s brother Shabbir,who had urged the court to direct the agency to probe role of Modi and Shah and of Intelligence Bureau officials,including Rajinder Kumar,who was questioned by CBI in the Ishrat case.

The CBI’s affidavit,filed by investigating officer Satish K Rathi,stated “…as regards to averments made in the application,it is submitted that relevant points are already being looked into during further investigation.”

In its chargesheet filed in December 2012,CBI had named eight accused policemen,including DSP Tarun Barot,as accused in the case.

The CBI chargesheet claimed Sadiq was killed in a staged encounter after being handed over to Gujarat Police by Maharashtra policemen.

Sadiq was shot in Ahmedabad in 2003 by city Detection of Crime Branch,which claimed he was a terrorist.

CBI is yet to uncover the nexus between Mumbai and Ahmedabad police in the case.

‘Will urge IB chief to declassify inputs’

Rathi also told the court he would write to IB chief requesting him to declassify inputs pertaining to this case. Rathi was replying to the court following prayers by the eight accused policemen seeking to make public the IB inputs. CBI had earlier submitted these inputs in a sealed cover to the court with a request that these inputs were classified information. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 3.
