Ex-IPS officer Kuldip Sharma, who took on Modi govt joins Congress

Addressing mediapersons, Sharma said: “I decided to join the Congress because there is lot of resilience, strength and quality in the Congress to serve the nation and the people”.

“The party has not gone away from its basic objectives of working for the well-being and advancement of the people of the country and the principles of secularism as laid down in the Constitution of India,” Sharma, who worked in various capacities for 37 years in the police department and served for some years even abroad, said.

Responding to a query, he said that he first thought of joining some non-governmental organisations but felt that he could use his experiences of 37-year-long political career for the benefit of the people if he joined a political movement.

“Indian National Congress has a great history ever since it was established on December 26, 1885. It won three wars for the country first in 1948, then in 1965 and again in 1971 under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi resulting into creation of Bangaldesh,” said Sharma.

Sharma, had during his stint in the CID (crime) taken on the then minister of state for home Amit Shah, who is now national president of the BJP, in connection with the Rs 1200 crore Madhavpura Mercantile Co-operative Bank (MMCB) case being investigated by the agency.

He then challenged the government’s decision before the Central Administrative Tribunal, blaming Modi directly.

He finally went on a central deputation as director general of the Bureau of Police Research and Development from where he retired in December 2012. He was subsequently appointed as an advisor in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sharma was subsequently served a chargesheet by the state accusing him of alleged irregularity of not submitting unused grants in time when he headed the Gujarat Sheep and Wool Development Corporation. A 31-year-old case against him was reopened and an FIR was lodged against him in 2010. It pertained to killing of two persons of a family in allegedly fake encounter and missing of two others of the same family belonging to Bhuj taluka of Kutch district.
