Gujarat to attract Rs 6,100 cr in ship-building & repair projects

The state govt has received about 14 applications from different players in the ship-building and repair industry.

The Gujarat government expects to attract private investment to the tune of Rs 6129 crore in form of ship-building and repair projects in the state, the Gujarat Assembly was informed on Wednesday.

The state government has received about 14 applications from different players in the ship-building and repair industry, till March 31, 2014, the state government said in a written reply to a question posed by MLA Satish Patel. Four of these applications are under implementation, while the rest are in preliminary stages, the government added.

There are already a few players in the ship-building industry in Gujarat. This include Alcock Ashdown in Bhavnagar, ABG Shipyard Limited at Magdalla, Modest Infrastructure Private Ltd in Bhavnagar, L&T Shipbuiding near Hazira and Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company Ltd at Pipavav.

Nargol port to attract Rs 3,800 cr of investments

Apart from the investment in ship-building, the state is expected to attract investments worth Rs 3,800 crore in the phase-I of the Nargol port project which is being developed in South Gujarat, state minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma said on Wednesday during the Question House.

According to the minister, the port was awaiting about six major clearances including those for Coastal Regulatory Zone. “There was a dire need for a port in South Gujarat…. We expect these clearances to come by July 2015 and the work on the port is expected to begin in April 2016,” the minister said.

The port is expected to benefit local industries including those in plastics, paper and pharmaceuticals sectors.

The original spot to built the port was Maroli village which was later shifted about 18 kilometers away to Nargol after the local farmers agitated against possible acquisition of their land.
