Faults in the tracks and bogies are likely to be the reasons behind the derailment of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district on Thursday afternoon that left four people dead, said officials citing a preliminary inquiry into the accident.
The railway officials, however, have not confirmed anything on record.
The death toll reached four on Friday as one more body was found when one of the compartments that had overturned was lifted with the help of a crane, said a railway official.
“We suspect the incident may have been caused by some defects in the railway track and bogies. So far, we have not found any other faults. The inquiry will look into how this happened as maintenance work on the railway track and bogies is done regularly as per a scheduled calendar. The probe will also examine whether the maintenance team was performing its duties properly,” said a senior railway official. The preliminary inquiry has found that the bogies overturned immediately after getting derailed, he added.
