Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sought a report Sunday after a fashion show in Gulmarg recently drew widespread criticism, with Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq terming it “outrageous” and “obscene”.
The Chief Minister said appropriate action would be taken after the report is submitted to him within 24 hours. “The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities and that too during this holy month,” Abdullah said.
The fashion show was organised on Friday in the backdrop of the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg to mark the 15th anniversary of the designer label Shivan & Narresh.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said, “Outrageous. That in the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in Gulmarg, pictures & videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in the valley known for its sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people?”
“Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir,” the Mirwaiz said.
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also slammed the fashion show as “an eminently avoidable event” during Ramzan.
“I consider myself to be a person of liberal orientation, and believe in dignified and mutually respectful coexistence. But this was not the best time to host such an event,” he said.
Describing the images from the show as “shocking”, Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi said, “This is what cultural invasion in the disguise of tourism looks like. They show an utter disregard for Kashmiri sentiments.
The Tourism department officials involved should be immediately taken to task, as well as the organisers Shivan & Narresh.”
