Agartala, August 4: During his visit to the violence-hit Gandatwisa area in Dhalai district on Sunday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced a Rs 242 crore relief and development package. The chief minister’s visit came roughly 23 days after the area witnessed ethnic tension, arson, and violence.
Saha said the state will provide Rs 2.30 crore in addition to the relief package already announced, and earmark Rs 239 crore under a special development package for the area.
The announcement came weeks after the Opposition CPI(M) and the Congress complained about insufficient facilities at relief camps housing displaced villagers.
Addressing media persons, the CM said, “I have visited many areas and interacted with the victims. I have also spoken with the parents of the deceased youth. It is indeed a sad incident. I have asked the civil and police administration to take steps… We have already provided assistance to the victims and the family of the deceased… Those who are conspiring (to instigate ethnic strife) will face the law.”
The CM also said his government has decided to set up security camps at 33KV and 30 Card – both areas being close to the violence-hit neighbourhood.
Asked about his plans for Gandatwisa, CM Saha said a market would be set up at Narayanpur, a 51 km-long Gandacherra-Ambadsa Road would be constructed, and cage farming for fisheries would be developed at Lake Dumboor, among other projects.
Around 40 houses, 30 shops, and a few government vehicles were damaged in ethnic violence that started over the death of a tribal youth, Parameshwar Reang, injured in a clash last month. Following the outbreak of violence, over 200 people were sheltered in relief camps. The local administration had to shut down internet services and impose a curfew to bring the situation under control.
