A Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight had to make an emergency landing at the Kolkata airport minutes after take-off on Friday night due to an engine failure, a senior official said.
Flight 6E0573 from Kolkata to Bengaluru, which became airborne at 10.36 pm on Friday, made an emergency landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) airport at 10.53 pm after failure of its left engine, he said. “An IndiGo flight bound for Bengaluru, experienced an engine failure shortly after taking off from Kolkata on Friday. The aircraft, carrying 173 passengers and crew, was forced to declare an emergency and make a safe landing. The pilot reported the engine failure to air traffic control, leading to a full emergency declaration,” said an airport official.
According to an official, a full emergency was declared at 10:39 pm, after which both the runways at the Kolkata Airport were handed over to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and prepared for safe landing. The plane successfully touched down on a single engine at 11:05 pm.
“It was learnt that the left side engine of the aircraft failed after take-off as a result of which it had to come back to Kolkata,” he said.
