Women-only university to come up soon: Delhi CM

Dikshit deliberated on key challenges facing the city and noted that people living in slums in the national capital was a matter of shame.

A university exclusively for women would come up in the national capital soon,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced today.

The university would be open for women from all over the country,and it is being set up as part of efforts to ensure women empowerment,she said addressing a gathering at the state-level Republic Day function here.

In her brief speech,Dikshit deliberated on key challenges facing the city and noted that people living in slums in the national capital was a matter of shame.

“We are ashamed that people are living in slums. Delhi government is working towards making the city slum-free in next 3-4 years,” Dikshit said.

Listing various achievements of her government,Dikshit mainly highlighted the “successful hosting” of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and said Delhi has become sort of a “dreamland” due to development works carried out during last few years.

“The Commonwealth games held in Delhi have left a high benchmark and London Olympics is now competing to match our standards,” she claimed.

Dikshit’s speech was preceded by a parade by Delhi Police,Home guard,NCC cadets,civil defence and children from various schools.

Later a colourful cultural programme featuring folk dance performances and aerobics by children enthralled the crowd.

The cultural programme also highlighted 100 years of New Delhi.
