With no basic amenities at her disposal,Sarita, the daughter of an electrician, worked hard to bag second position in the state in Class X exams of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB),scoring 95.61% marks. The results were declared on Monday.
Sarita studies at RS Model Senior Secondary School,Shastri Nagar, and lives at Partap Singh Wala village near Hambaran road. Because of the poor financial condition of the family, the school management had waived her entire school fee. Uniform and books were also being sponsored by the school.
Principal M L Kalra said,The girl comes from a far-off area and could not even pay the auto-rickshaw fare. So we are paying the transportation charges as well. The girl came to us in Class VIII and we found her exceptionally bright. So we wasted no time and waived her entire fee.
Saritas mother Shakuntla is a heart patient. My husband is a daily wager. So we lead a hand-to-mouth existence. Due to my heart trouble, the familys financial condition has deteriorated. My brother is well off. So he is helping me in the treatment. Otherwise,we cannot afford it, she said.
Sarita had already enrolled herself in the same school in non-medical stream and wants to be an engineer. But her mother says we cannot afford her education, though she is bright and studies on her own.
However, the principal said,We have many good Samaritans who will help the girl even in higher education as well. Till Class XII,we will be providing her free education. She always used to bag top rank in the school,so I was very sure that she will be in top five in the state.
Saritas brother has just cleared Class XII,but he is not studying further because of their financial condition.
However,Sarita said,I want to make my parents proud and I will succeed in my goal.
