DU teacher refuse to abide by semester system

Differences between DU Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental and faculty intensified over semester system.

Differences between DU Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental and faculty intensified with teachers today saying they will not accept semester-based system introduced “without consulting” them,a charge denied by the Dean.

“We will go according to the annual system. The VC has eroded powers of the councils by not discussing the matter.

His act is in violation of the University Act enacted by the Parliament,” DU Teachers Association (DUTA) President Aditya Narayan Misra told reporters here.

The teachers also said they would not accept the semester-based system introduced by the dean “arbitrarily and autocratically without consulting with the Academic or Executive Councils.” Claiming that no syllabus for current academic session was officially passed, the faculty members said the time table of the various colleges will be prepared in line with the annual system.

However,Pental denied the charges.

“The fact is that DUTA disrupted almost every meeting of the course committee as they don’t want the semester system.

Besides it is not possible to consult each and every one,” Pental told PTI.

The teachers also accused him of “hushing up” and mdelaying internal probe into Mayapuri radiation exposure after a gamma irradiator containing radioactive cobalt-60 was sold as scrap by the University.

“Internal inquiry is nothing but a hush-up. The VC is deliberately delaying the report,to be submitted in one month,as his term will come to an end in two months time,” he said.

Demanding VC’s arrest in the case,Misra alleged that the internal inquiry committee members have “close links” with the VC and expressed doubt about the veracity of the inquiry.

Denying the allegations,Pental said,“The committee will file the report by July end. The members are a retired professor and two other experts from outside the university.

DUTA is trying to belittle the university by raising the allegations.” The teachers also sought to know why the dean has not convened the mandatory Annual General Body meeting, the agenda of which was to prepare a report on administrative and financial matters and submit it before the President who is the University Visitor.

“The last AGM was convened on 9th March 2009,over 15 months earlier. This year’s AGM meeting, scheduled on May 28,was postponed and has not convened so far,” Misra said.

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association will hold a march on July 8 from Indian Institute of Public Administration to the Delhi Police Headquarters,ITO,to demand the arrest of Pental for selling the gamma cell containing Cobalt-60.

“The usual procedure is to return the radioactive material to BARC or to the Canada-based company which manufactured it. Why did the VC sold it as scrap ignoring all safety rules,” Misra asked.
