Following the recent attack on its MP and two legislators in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that democracy was being “killed” in the state under her rule.

At a press conference in New Delhi, BJP’s national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla said, “Three separate incidents of deadly violence have been carried out against BJP representatives, specifically targeting leaders from the tribal community. Amidst the ongoing devastation in Bengal, Banerjee’s celebrations and the political frustration of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have manifested themselves in this violent phase against three elected BJP leaders…”

He said, “West Bengal has been facing floods and landslides, particularly affecting North Bengal. More than 35 people have lost their lives, and over 50,000 have been displaced. This dire situation in North Bengal is largely a man-made disaster, as the floods, though natural, were exacerbated by the corruption of the TMC government…”

On Monday, BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked by a mob in Jalpaiguri district while visiting rain and landslide-hit areas. The next day, another BJP MLA, Manoj Oraon of Kumargram in Alipurduar district, was also allegedly attacked while distributing relief.

The BJP alleged the attacks were orchestrated by the TMC. The state’s ruling party, for its part, accused the BJP leaders of using the natural disaster as a backdrop for photo opportunities instead of offering genuine help.
