Less than 24 hours after an out-of-control speeding truck ran over pedestrians and rammed into multiple vehicles, killing at least three men and injuring 12 others at a no-entry zone of Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital, Indore, the government on Tuesday took action against several police personnel, including senior officers.

A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) was removed from his post, while eight police officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), were suspended with immediate effect.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased, and has ordered disciplinary action against nine officers.

The Chief Minister held a meeting with top officers of the police and the administration at the Indore District Magistrate’s office.

“Families of the three deceased will be given financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each. The injured will be given Rs 1 lakh each and full treatment will be provided to them,” he told reporters after the meeting.

The incident occurred on Monday night, when the out-of-control truck ran over pedestrians on Aerodrome Road in Indore, rammed into some vehicles, and then caught fire.

Two people died on the spot and more than 10 people were injured, police said, adding that the truck driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The two persons who died on the spot were identified as Laxmikant Soni (50) and Kailashchandra Joshi (62).

Mahesh Khatwase (54), who was seriously injured in the incident, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Two others injured in the incident are said to be in critical condition.

The truck driver, Gulsher (50), who is from the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, has been arrested. The investigation suggested he was heavily drunk at the time of the incident, police alleged.
