President Droupadi Murmu Monday gave assent to the three new criminal law Bills, which were passed by Parliament last week. The President also cleared the Telecommunications Bill, which seeks to overhaul the country’s century-old telecom law to make the sector investor-friendly. The Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 will replace the IPC, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita will replace the CrPC, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam will replace the Indian Evidence Act. While the three laws have now been notified in the official gazette, the Ministry of Home Affairs will notify the date when they will come into effect. Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “The successor government in 2024 must be to review these laws and remove the draconian provisions.the (Indian Penal) Code is more often than not used against the working class and weaker sections, the law will become an instrument of oppression against these sections of the people.”
