A Hindu woman who had accused a Muslim man of marrying her by faking his identity, an affair described as love jihad by right-wing organizations, committed suicide by hanging herself in Gwalior.
Manju Kushwaha alias Rizwana was found hanging late on Wednesday at her home in Chandravadani Gali under Jhansi Road Police Station. Manju, a nurse in her 30s had sent her two children to play on the terrace before taking the extreme step.
Adil alias Sunny reportedly fought with his wife and left home. Her 10-year-old son saw his mother hanging through a window and raised alarm. The police recovered a suicide note from an almirah in which Manju said she was fed up with her husband’s alleged torture.
In a complaint with the Jhansi Road Police Station in September last year, she alleged that Adil had suppressed his religious identity and introduced himself as Sunny Kushwaha. She had alleged that he forced her to convert to Islam and take the name Rizwana and also accused him for demanding dowry.
The police said she patched up with her husband and withdrew the charges of forcible conversion, but an FIR was lodged and he was booked for seeking dowry.
Manju married Adil in March 2014 after the two met on a train. She had two sons from her first marriage. She lived at a rented place for four months before moving in with Adil.
In-charge of Jhansi Road Police Station Anup Bhadoria told The Indian Express that Adil had been arrested in connection with the previous FIR and released on bail. He said a case of suicide has been registered.
