A retrenched employee of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital here allegedly attempted to commit suicide today by consuming sleeping pills while participating in a demonstration to urge reinstatement of all the dismissed staff at the college today.
Police said the man was among 137 employees engaged on contract basis and they were all retrenched in February this year. The employees had been holding demonstrations frequently at the college seeking their reinstatement.
The man was rushed to a hospital and is being treated,they said.
Leader of the opposition and former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam visited him and later told newsmen that the AINRC government had not been taking care of such employees. Already incidents of attempted suicide had been reported from among dismissed staff in various departments and PSUs,he said.
