No decision taken by SC collegium on Dinakaran row: CJI

The SC collegium met in New Delhi to discuss the issue relating to its recommendation for elevation of Karnataka CJ P D Dinakaran.

The Supreme Court collegium met in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the issue relating to its recommendation for elevation of Karnataka Chief Justice P D Dinakaran,accused of amassing wealth,but did not arrive at any conclusion on the demand to review its decision.

“No decision has been taken on the issue,” said an official message sent verbally by Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishanan’s office to reporters waiting outside his residence.

The official of the CJI said he has been asked to communicate to the media that no decision has been taken on the issue of Dinakaran at the collegium meeting.

Earlier in the day,the meeting of the collegium meeting headed by Justice Balakrishnan lasted for around 35-40 minutes.

The other four members of the collegium Justices B N Agrawal,S H Kapadia,Tarun Chatterjee and Altamas Kabir discussed the issue of Dinakaran against whom allegations of amassing of wealth were levelled by senior members of the Bar.

Justice Dinakaran,whose elevation to the Supreme Court has been strongly opposed by the the Bar,had reportedly met the CJI last week and had denied all the allegations.

Eminent jurists Fali S Nariman,Shanti Bhushan,Ashok Desai,Ram Jethmalani and Anil Divan have suggested that the CJI reconsider the decision of the collegium to elevate Dinakaran to the Supreme Court.

The Advocates Association of Bangalore (AAB) had yesterday held an emergent meeting in the wake of the allegations against Dinakaran and urged him not to preside over the bench till he is cleared of the allegations.
