Moily takes exception to advocates’ protest in K’tka HC

Union Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily decried the unruly incidents in Karnataka HC premises during a protest by lawyers.

Disapproving advocates taking law into their own hands,Union Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily decried the unruly incidents in Karnataka High Court premises during a protest by lawyers on Monday against continuance of Chief Justice P D Dinakaran.

“How can advocates take law into their own hands? Judiciary enjoys independence. Can Judges work in a free atmosphere,if advocates indulge in such things,” Moily told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Bangalore.

“Advocates should observe the rule of law,” he said, apparently expressing displeasure over the November 9 incident during which Justice Dinakaran, who is facing land grabbing charges, was pushed and two judges locked in the court hall for refusing to suspend hearing of cases during the protest.

“We will not discuss issues relating to appointment of judges and elevation of judges in public. There are a set of procedures the government and the Supreme Court Collegium follow. Merely on the basis of the Collegium recommendation judges are not appointed,” Moily said, when asked about the Collegium keeping the elevation of Justice Dinakaran to Supreme Court in abeyance.

On violation of parole norms by Manu Sharma, convicted in the Jessica Lall murder case,he said the Union Home Ministry was now working on new set of guidelines.
