Cop arrested for raping pregnant woman in Rajasthan’s Sanganer

A constable in the Jaipur Police was arrested for allegedly raping a pregnant woman earlier this week, police said Wednesday.

According to a complaint filed by the victim’s husband in Sanganer, the woman’s family had approached the police on March 7 following a dispute with their neighbours. The next day, the suspect, who was investigating the case, took the woman and her toddler son to a hotel room and allegedly raped her, stuffing a cloth in her mouth when she protested. He also threatened to send the husband to jail if she protested, the complaint said.

Sanganer Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinod Kumar Sharma confirmed the arrest saying that the policeman had been sent to judicial custody. The woman is a daily wager from Dausa.

“According to the FIR, the woman’s family had some dispute with their neighbors, which culminated in a fight. The woman’s family filed a complaint on March 7 night when the constable was on duty. On the morning of March 8, the constable called on the woman (at her house) and asked her to accompany him to the police station. But instead of taking her to the police station, he took her to a hotel and raped her…The woman’s husband registered a complaint the same night.”

At the hotel, the suspect allegedly did not make an entry in the hotel registry, telling the hotel staff that the woman was a “relative” and they needed a few minutes to take care of the child’s “dirty clothes”. They left within 30 minutes, the police said.

The suspect has been booked under sections concerning rape, wrongful confinement and abduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and medical tests have been conducted on the suspect as well as the woman, police said.
