Constitution Day 2025 History and Significance: Samvidhan Divas, or Constitution Day of India, is an annual observance that commemorates the official adoption of the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949, establishing India as a sovereign and democratic republic.

The Constitution is not a mere lawyer’s document; it is a vehicle of life, and its spirit is always the spirit of the age.

The above quote can be attributed to Dr B.R. Ambedkar, famously known as the “chief architect” or “father” of the Indian Constitution.

The government of India declared November 26 as Constitution Day in 2015, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, to promote constitutional values and commemorate Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary. Previously, the day was honoured as Law Day.

Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly, whose last session ended on November 26, 1949.

Two months later, on January 26, 1950, the Constitution came into effect after being signed by 284 members.

This date was chosen because the Congress’s Poorna Swaraj resolution had been declared on the same date in 1930. As a result, January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day in India.

Ever since 2015, November 26 has been observed annually as the Constitution Day of India, or Samvidhan Divas, with this year, it will be observed on November 26, 2025, falling on a Wednesday.

As announced by the PIB, Constitution Day 2025 will be held in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan at 11:00 AM with the launch of the Constitution of India in nine languages.

The day reflects on the country’s transformative journey and promotes and reaffirms its commitment to constitutional ideals and democratic traditions.
