‘Tragic irony’: Congress slams Lokpal for BMW tender, questions public spending

MP P Chidambaram said "When Honourable judges of the Supreme Court are provided modest sedans, why do the Chairman and six members of the Lokpal require BMW cars? Why spend public money to acquire these cars?"

Members of the Opposition have trained their guns on the Lokpal after they announced their decision to float a tender to procure seven BMW cars. “The Lokpal of India invites open tenders from reputed agencies for supply of seven BMW 3 series 330Li cars to the Lokpal of India,” read the tender issued on October 16. The tender was floated for the ‘M Sport’ model with ‘long wheelbase’, and in white colour.

MP P Chidambaram posted on X: “When Honourable judges of the Supreme Court are provided modest sedans, why do the Chairman and six members of the Lokpal require BMW cars? Why spend public money to acquire these cars?” He added, “I hope that at least one or two members of the Lokpal have refused, or will refuse, to accept these cars.”

Pointing out the irony, MP Abhishek Singhvi said, “I chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Lokpal. Dr L M Singhvi first conceived idea of Lokpal in the early 1960s. To see this anti-corruption body now ordering BMWs for its members is tragic irony, the guardians of integrity chasing luxury over legitimacy.”

Congress leader Udit Raj said, “Lokpal is following in the footsteps of the PM. I have never heard about Lokpal doing any work, what corruption did the Lokpal reveal? What will these corrupt people do about corruption?. They are just enjoying, they have no morality left.”

Lokpal wants to buy 7 luxury BMW cars worth Rs 5 crore for itself. This is the same institution that was supposed to fight corruption after the so-called “India Against Corruption” movement — a movement backed by the RSS and designed only to bring down the Congress government, Congress leader Dr Shama Mohamed posted on X.

“That movement made Narendra Modi the Prime Minister, and he delivered a Lokpal that exists only on paper and now filled with corrupt officers enjoying taxpayers’ money,” she added.
