‘Congress is anti-Ambedkar, anti-reservation, anti-Constitution’: Amit Shah defends remarks amid Opposition backlash

After facing the Opposition’s backlash over his remarks on Dr BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah in a press conference Wednesday, told the media to report his full remarks, asserting that he comes from a party that would never insult Ambedkar’s legacy.

“My speech, which was clear and without any confusion, is on Rajya Sabha record,” Shah said, defending himself against accusations from the Congress that he had demeaned Ambedkar.

“Congress distorted my remarks on Ambedkar; I come from a party that can never insult him. The discussion on Constitution left the Congress with no answer to the charge that it is against Ambedkar, Savarkar and reservation,” he said.

Earlier, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had demanded the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah for ‘insulting’ Ambedkar and asked him to “apologise to the nation,” while Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien submitted a privilege notice against Shah over his remarks. And, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had claimed that those who support Manusmriti are inherently opposed to Ambedkar’s vision for society.
