Maoist killed, automatic weapon recovered in Chhattisgarh encounter

Police said Monday that they found the body of a Maoist who was killed in an encounter that took place on Sunday afternoon in the jungle area on the inter-district border of Narayanpur and Kanker in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region.

A self-loading rifle (SLR) was recovered from the deceased, who was wearing the uniform of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), an armed wing of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), police said.
Acting on information about the presence of armed Maoists from North Bastar division and Maad division of the CPI (Maoist), security forces comprising District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Border Security Force (BSF) began an operation. Around 12.30 pm on Sunday, an exchange of fire took place and intermittent firing went on for hours. “There is a possibility of some Maoists being killed and few others being injured. Our search operations are going on,” said a police officer.
This year, a total of 50 Maoists have been killed in encounters in Chhattisgarh, including 34 in Bastar region. Also, nine jawans and a civilian driver lost their lives in Maoist attacks.
