Nearly a month after TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said they would leave the BJP-led coalition if promises made to the tribal Tiprasa people remained unfulfilled, Tripura Tourism Minister and BJP leader Sushanta Chowdhury Wednesday said they would abide by the decision of the Centre on the issue.
“As they (TIPRA Motha) are in the coalition, they are part of our government. Whatever the Centre decides, the state government will abide by the decision and will work in the same direction. We are in favour of peace, fraternity, and tranquillity,” the minister said while speaking to reporters at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala.
Pradyot Kishore in a video message last month said, “I want to tell my Tiprasa warriors clearly that politics is not important but the rights of our people are more important. So, you made one thing clear in your head that unless rights are given to our indigenous people… we should be ready to stay out of power also. There is no use of being in government that (is) not helping your people.”
The Tipra Motha had signed a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government in February last year over finding an amicable solution for economic, political, cultural, social and linguistic problems faced by the tribals in the state. Within days of the signing of the tripartite accord, the TIPRA Motha, which was till then the main Opposition party in the state, joined the BJP-led Tripura government.
When asked about the earlier wave of insurgency in the state, Chowdhury said, “Those who engaged in extremism have become extinct today… Our policy is ‘Ek Bharat, Akhand Bharat’…. Extremism was never a solution and will never be a solution in the coming days also.”
Asked about Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman’s recent allegation of people not getting ration properly made during a public rally, Chowdhury said, “Being a senior leader, he should first know the facts. He should be a good listener first and then speak. People are getting rice, pulses, sugar, atta, tea. During Durga puja, over nine lakh ration card holders were given sugar, semolina, and flour free of cost.”
On Wednesday, Chowdhury also announced that over 100 vacant posts of post-graduate teachers under the Education Department and senior store guard under the Food and Civil Supplies Department will be filled up.
“The Cabinet during a meeting held on March 10 has decided to appoint 118 post-graduate computer science teachers in Vidyajyoti schools. The candidates should have a post-graduate degree in the subject along with a BEd. These posts would be recruited through the Teachers’ Recruitment Board of Tripura,” Chowdhury said.
“A total of 35 senior store guards would be appointed through Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura,” Chowdhury, who also holds the Food and Civil Supplies portfolio, added.
