With the two new appointments, the SC will function at its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. In less than 48 hours since the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation, the Centre on Thursday appointed Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate K V Viswanathan as judges of the top court.
The two are expected to take oath as judges on Friday morning.
The SC Collegium headed by CJI D Y Chandrachud had recommended the appointments on May 16 .

Even as the Law Ministry undergoes a change of guard, the appointment of the two judges has been cleared in just two working days. In the last round of appointments, it took the government 53 days — the Collegium had recommended elevation of five judges on December 13, 2022, and the government cleared the file on February 4 this year.
Before that, Justice Dipankar Dutta was recommended by the Collegium on September 26, 2022, and the government cleared the file on December 10 that year — or 75 days.
