The Centre on Thursday said it allocated Rs 1,310 crore for India’s G20 Presidency and Leaders’ Summit. “The budget allocated by the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for India’s G20 Presidency and Summit in FY 2022-23 was Rs 320 crore, and in FY 2023-24 was Rs 990 crore,” MoS External Affairs V Muraleedharan said in Rajya Sabha, while responding to a question by TMC MP Saket Gokhale on the total budget allocated by the Ministry of Finance for G20 Summit. On the “actual expenditure incurred by the G20 Secretariat on organising the G20 Summit and related events across India”, the MEA stated that the bills are “being received and processed by the secretariat”. It, however, said that the secretariat has released Rs 1,310 crore over the two financial years, and no additional funds. More than 250 official track meetings across 60 cities and hundreds of related events were organised in the country during India’s G20 Presidency for a year — from December 1, 2022, to November 30 this year. The G20 Leaders’ Summit was held at New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam on September 9-10. According to government records, over Rs 4,100 crore was spent on sprucing up New Delhi for the two-day summit, and the expenses were broadly in nearly 12 categories. Security — among the significant components of G20 preparations — was among the most prominent items in the list of expenditure, in addition to maintenance of roads, footpaths, street signage and lighting. Nine government agencies — from civic bodies such as NDMC and MCD, to departments under the Ministry of Defence — incurred an expenditure of Rs 75 lakh to over Rs 3,500 crore on work ranging from horticulture improvement to G20 branding. At over Rs 4,000 crore, central agencies such as India Trade Promotion Organisation , Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Military Engineer Services — in addition to those operating in New Delhi under the central government such as Delhi Police, NDMC and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) — incurred 98% per cent of the summit expenses, showed the records.
