The seat in Dumri was vacated after the death of Jagarnath Mahto, who had been the Dumri MLA since 2005 when Jharkhand’s first Assembly poll as a separate state was held. Mahto, a member of the Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, had won the seat in the 2019 Assembly polls. The JMM, now an INDIA bloc member, is fielding Mahto’s wife Bebi Devi this time. The NDA has campaigned heavily in this seat, with visits from Union ministers Arjun Munda and Annapurna Devi, and former Chief Ministers Babulal Marandi and Raghubar Das, in an attempt to wrest the constituency from the JMM. Results in this bypoll won’t immediately impact the Assembly composition, with the JMM-led ruling coalition holding 49 of the 80 total seats
In Kerala's Puthuppally, the bye-election was called after the death of the Congress’s Oommen Chandy, a two-time Chief Minister and the Puthuppally MLA since 1970. A Congress bastion, the only time it had a non-Congress MLA was in 1967 when the CPI(M) won the seat. In the 2021 Assembly polls, Chandy had won the seat for the 12th consecutive time, defeating the CPI(M)’s Jaick C Thomas in a close contest, by just over 9,000 votes. The Congress, which leads the Opposition United Democratic Front in the Kerala government, named Chandy’s son, 37-year-old Youth Congress leader Chandy Oommen as its candidate. The CPI(M), which leads the Left Democratic Front government in the state, fielded Thomas again, in the hopes that he can further cut into the Congress’s vote share.
Just months after the Assembly elections in Tripura, two seats--Dhanpur and Boxanagar-- saw bypolls in the state – one necessitated by the death of an MLA and the other by a resignation. Both seats featured a straight contest between the CPI(M) and BJP while the Congress backed the CPI(M).
In Uttarakhand, a year after the Assembly polls, the Bageshwar seat witnessed a bypoll following the death of sitting BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass. Dass, a four-time MLA and minister with the portfolios of Social Welfare, Minority Welfare, Road Transport, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, had won in the 2022 polls for a fourth consecutive time after defeating the Congress’s Ranjeet Das by more than 12,000 votes.
In UP's Ghosi, the bypoll was called after serial party-hopper Dara Singh Chauhan resigned as the Samajwadi Party’s Ghosi MLA to rejoin the BJP earlier this year. In the 2022 Assembly polls, Chauhan won the Ghosi seat as an SP candidate, defeating the BJP’s Vijay Kumar Rajbhar by more than 22,000 votes. This time, the BJP fielded Dass’s wife Parwati in a direct contest against the Congress’s Basant Kumar. In a test of Opposition unity, the Samajwadi Party (SP), despite being a Congress ally in the INDIA bloc, fielded a candidate, Bhagawati Prasad. The Congress has opted not to field a candidate and is backing its INDIA partner, even though the SP refused to withdraw its candidate in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar by-poll
In 2021, the BJP made its first significant foray into the West Bengal Assembly, winning 77 seats compared with just 3 in the previous election. In Dhupguri, the BJP’s Bishnu Pada Ray defeated the Trinamool Congress’s Mitali Roy by a narrow 4,300-vote margin. The constituency saw a bypoll after Ray’s death in July. The BJP fielded Tapasi Roy, the widow of CRPF jawan Jagannath Roy who was killed in a terrorist attack in Kashmir in 2021. Both the Trinamool and CPI(M) fielded new candidates for the bypoll. With the Congress backing the CPI(M) against the TMC, the bypoll saw a contest between INDIA bloc members.
IN A BIG boost for the INDIA alliance, the Samajwadi Party defeated the BJP in the Ghosi bypoll in Uttar Pradesh, and with a big margin of 42,759 votes. It was the first election in UP since the formation of the Opposition alliance, and apart from SP ally RLD, the Congress too had extended support to the SP candidate as part of the INDIA understanding.
The SP saw a massive jump in its vote share from the 2022 Assembly polls in the seat, with party president Akhilesh Yadav hailing the result as “the beginning of INDIA’s win”. The RLD and Congress too welcomed the result.
Making the victory doubly sweet for the SP was the fact that its candidate Sudhakar Singh was up against Dara Singh Chauhan, who had left the SP for the BJP after winning last year on the SP ticket.
Chauhan was seen as heading for greener pastures when he resigned as SP MLA to join the BJP. There was talk of the influential OBC leader of eastern UP being accommodated as a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government if he won. The defeat leaves him nowhere. Read More
For the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, the Congress's win in the Puthuppally Assembly bypoll is a major setback. The party, which leads the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in the state, will find it difficult to seek solace in the refrain that the Congress has merely retained a seat that has been its pocket borough since 1970, riding on a sympathy wave after the death of party veteran Oommen Chandy.
Soon after the by-election schedule had been declared, CPI(M) state secretary and party Politburo member M V Govindan had stated that the Puthuppally contest would be a referendum on the party's regime, led by Pinarayi Vijayan. What has shocked the CPI(M) is the massive margin by which former CM Oommen Chandy's son Chandy Oommen defeated its candidate Jaick C Thomas, who had been handpicked from Chandy’s turf and had contested against Chandy Sr twice in the past.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself led the LDF campaign, turning up at the constituency thrice and attending conventions in all eight village panchayats. That apart, many of his Cabinet colleagues and senior CPI(M) leaders were involved in micro-level campaigning at Puthuppally. Read More
The result of the Puthuppally Assembly bypoll is a severe jolt for the Kerala BJP. Its candidate and Kottayam district secretary G Lijin Lal managed to get only 5.02% of the polled votes, against the 61.38% vote share of the winner, the Congress's Chandy Oommen, and 32.49% votes bagged by the CPI(M)’s Jaick C Thomas.
In the party's worst showing in the constituency since 2011, Lal got only 6,558 votes, against 11,694 in 2021.
Given that the bypoll was held soon after several Opposition parties had cobbled together the INDIA coalition at the national level, the BJP's main campaign issue was the dichotomy of a direct fight between the CPI(M) and Congress in Kerala, while the parties maintained bonhomie outside the state.
Hoping to improve its show at Puthuppally, the BJP had held outreach programmes aimed at the influential Christian community in the constituency. However, the violence in Manipur — which was perceived as Christian Kuki-Zomis suffering at the hands of the majority Hindu Meiteis — is believed to have dampened the party's efforts at attracting Christian voters at Puthuppally. IN A BIG boost for the ruling BJP in Tripura, the party won bypolls to both the Assembly seats for which results were declared Friday. One of the constituencies was a sitting seat of the CPI(M), which was backed by ally Congress in the bypoll.

THE BJP retained the Bageshwar Assembly bypoll seat in Uttarakhand on Friday, with its candidate Parwati Dass winning by a narrow margin of 2,405 votes.
Dass is the wife of Chandan Ram Dass, whose death in April necessitated the bypoll. Dass had won Bageshwar for the fourth time in the 2022 Assembly elections by a huge margin.
He was a minister with portfolios of Social Welfare, Minority Welfare, Road Transport, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.
This time, in an attempt to gain sympathy votes, the BJP fielded Dass’s wife Parwati. After the Congress’s 2022 candidate Ranjit Das left to join the BJP just weeks before the election, the party opted to field former AAP candidate Kumar. Ranjit, however, was not named as the BJP candidate. Read More

Bebi Devi was neck-and-neck with NDA ally All Jharkhand Students’ Union’s (AJSU) Yashoda Devi. Until the 14th round, Yashoda Devi had the lead. Bebi Devi’s husband and the sitting JMM MLA from the seat, Jagarnath Mahato, died earlier this year, necessitating the bypoll.
