BSF nabs 4 Rohingya persons, 2 human traffickers in North Tripura

The Border Security Force (BSF) Saturday detained four Rohingya persons and two Indian touts in Dharmanagar under North Tripura district for illegally entering the country.

Speaking to reporters, Smritikanta Bardhan, Officer-in-Charge, Dharmanagar police station, said jawans of the 199 Battalion of BSF apprehended the six accused near the Dharmanagar Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) and handed them over to the state police.

A case has been registered against the accused for violating the Passports Act, among other sections of the law. The arrestees would be produced before a local court on Sunday with a plea to remand them in police custody for further investigation.

The Rohingya persons were identified as Jahid Alam, Mantajul Haque, Meentara, and Putu Akhter. The Indian touts were identified as Munim and Iqbal.

The police said Alam confessed to having paid Rs 25,000 to the human traffickers for illegally crossing the barbed-wire fencing along the Indo-Bangla international border at Kailashahar in Unakoti district.

Several Bangladeshi and Rohingya persons were arrested in different parts of Tripura in the last few months.

As per a report of the Tripura Police in possession of this correspondent, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested from January 1, 2024, till February 28 this year.

A further breakdown of the data showed that 483 illegal foreigners were arrested since August 5, 2024, when the Sheikh Hasina government fell in Bangladesh.
