Congress leader Surendra Rajput tried drawing a parallel between Nobel laureate Maria Machado and Rahul Gandhi, saying both were Leaders of Opposition who were fighting for democratic ideals in their respective nations.

Shehzad Poonawalla, Rahul GandhiShehzad Poonawalla has said Rahul Gandhi would get the award if there was a Nobel Prize for hypocrisy.

The BJP has slammed the Congress for an apparent Nobel Peace Prize nomination demand for Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Soon after the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Maria Corina Machado for her relentless campaign against oppression and bolstering the democratic system in Venezuela, Congress leader Surendra Rajput posted on X: “This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Leader of the Opposition in Venezuela for defending the constitution. The Leader of Opposition in India, Rahul Gandhi, is fighting the battle to save the country’s constitution.”

The party, though, has not made any such official demand.

‘Rahul Gandhi murdered democracy’

However, the BJP targeted Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over Rajput’s post. Calling the mention of Rahul Gandhi in the post “bizarre”, BJP’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said: “Bizarre Congress is demanding Nobel Prize for Rahul Baba He would get it if there one meant for 1) hypocrisy 2) lying 3) losing elections 99 times ! 4) murdering democracy and constitution in 1975 and 1984 [sic].”
