Desertification and poverty are linked and India is taking proactive measures to tackle land degradation recognising that it is not just an environmental but socio-economic issue, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said Monday.
The minister was speaking at the 16th conference of parties held under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“India has transitioned from reactive drought response to proactive, sustainable strategies, centred on preparedness and prevention,” Yadav said. Nearly 200 countries are in Riyadh to discuss and enhance efforts to combat desertification, land degradation and droughts.
Yadav said that India understands the importance of land, water, rainfall and effect of climate change on agriculture and livelihood.
As a result, it has initiated several programmes to enhance resilience and recovery against land degradation, including issuance of soil health cards, to help farmers engage in sustainable agricultural practices, he said.
During the 14th conference, held in Greater Noida, India had committed to restore 26 million hectares of land by 2030.
