In its joint meeting with state bar councils Sunday, the Bar Council of India passed a resolution to request the Centre to frame effective laws for the protection of advocates in case of an attack on them.
According to a press release issued by the Bar Council of India, the meeting “unanimously” resolved to request the Central Government to “frame effective law for the protection of lives, interests and privilege of advocates and their families and in case of any attack on them or in a case of (any bodily harm) injury to them or their family, the meeting has demanded an effective for appropriate payment of compensation in such cases”.
This comes after Friday’s incident when a suspended lawyer chased a woman and allegedly fired multiple times at her in a court in Saket, before fleeing on his two-wheeler.
The accused, Kameshwar Kumar Singh, 49, was later arrested from his brother’s home in Faridabad by a Delhi Police Crime Branch team. The woman, M Radha, 42, sustained injuries after two bullets grazed her abdomen and right arm. A lawyer’s clerk, Ajay Singh Chauhan, also received bullet injuries on his right arm.
A video of the incident showed Singh training his pistol at Radha on the stairs leading up to the lawyers’ block and shooting several rounds at her, even as she screams and starts running towards the other side.
According to the police, the motive appeared to be personal enmity—the accused had filed a case last year alleging the woman had cheated him of Rs 25 lakh. The hearing in the case was on Friday.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Vinod Sharma, President, Saket Bar Association, said, “Security is always tightened on court premises and guards at the gate are equipped with hand-held and door-frame metal detectors… Bar association members have held meetings with senior officers for enhanced security and more force will be deployed in the coming weeks.”
